Images from the summer

So I have got back some film that I shot this summer but I did not have a chance to scan the negatives, so basically there is no image to this visual blog...


Anyhoo,


I was shooting water lillies up north, they are black and white shot with the holga, of course you cannot look at these little water thingies without thinking of Monet and his work. Back in 1992 I went to where he lived and worked, Giverny, it was just like walking into the paintings. I should find some of those pics and scan them, especially as I am not in them so you cannot see how tragically long my hair was at the time.

I digress, here is a link of those paintings that are in the oval galleries of the Orangerie, in the tuileries garden in Paris a short hop from the Louvre, if I remember correctly, which I may not. I looked up the name, the painting series is Les Nymphéas, 4 paintings in this oval gallery so you are surrounded by nature paintings, it is way better than it sounds.

Actually at the gallery, you will also find Chaim Soutine painting(s?) there is the one of the altar boy

He also did this famous painting of a flayed beef, a homage to Rembrandt's Flayed Ox

And this is Francis Bacon

I think the text in the Bacon picture that was added by my cursor going over the image when I took the screen shot, saying "francis-bacon-painting" kinda adds something.

I love the thick rich painting style of Soutine, you can see how he has elaborated on the brush strokes of Rembrandt and perhaps has visually indicated where painting like this can go under the brush of Frank Auerbach, whose oil paintings famously sag from being wet for decades.

Mushroom Paintings and High Style

Hey if you have a second, check out November's copy of Style at Home magazine. In the High/Low section, you'll see two of my paintings, of mushrooms....what do you want from me, it pulled the room together.

Old Painting 1995?

I was going through some old emails and found this picture my brother sent me of a painting I did for him in like 1995 or 1996. Part of the fun with this image was that I had to mail it from Toronto to San Diego and went to my local post office which, at the time, was the oldest post office of Toronto, the office of old York.

Anyways, they do not have anything modern there, that is part of their schtick, so I had to apply $60 of small denomination stamps to the painting to send it down. Years later, I think 2000, I was staying in SD and decided to heavily rework the background elements. I was more satisfied with the appearance of the woman, her look is more ambiguous and she appears to glance to the male and the viewer simultaneously. The guy from the left side with his back turned was a new addition as well. My brother? Well he wanted to be more monochromatic in blacks and grays.

Long Time Comin'...

I thought I would log in an entry while the workers next door bash the crap out of the adjacent apartment, ...serenity now.

I decided to put this picture up on the blog, I drew it in 1994 0r 95. I say drew as it is oil stick on top of oil pastels on paper. I suppose it was to be a study for a another piece but it was rather large and the other drawing/painting was never completed- instead this is what started my 'urban architecture' series of that era which continued until I re-entered college in 1998.

(wow, 19__ really looks good and carries more weight than 20__. so take that 2012 and shove it)

This drawing/painting was severely damaged and I recently restored it, something I am very happy to have accomplished, so now it sits on the wall next to my computer.

London

Went down to London to check out my favorite gallery, The National Gallery where you can see the very modern looking painting by Manet. I absolutely love this image, even if it is depicting something fairly tragic.


After the museums had closed, its just time to walk to the streets to catch construction workers just doing nothing but checking out people and then over to Covent Garden to watch insane street performers.

I have just added a gallery from our recent trip to China- One month in the world's most populated country, it was amazing. Most of the China pictures are digital. I also took a very heavy Yashica twin lens camera, look for more film pics to be added in the next day or so when they are scanned.
